If the meaning of a true democracy is to be ‘of the people, by the people and for the people’; buildings that house the bearers of democracy, must also display the same ethos. But contrary to this ideology, more often than otherwise on entering a government office, we are left feeling intimidated and anxious. How true does this common notion hold good and if true, what are the factors that cause such anxiety and how can the problem be tackled through design?

This paper is an attempt to understand the factors of built and un-built environment in a government office in regard to the manner in which it hosts public-government (employee) interaction and the quality of working environment in these offices.
